Polymer 3D Printed Adaptive Joint System
Role: Business Planning, Design, Engineering, Management, Cost & Quality Control, Procurement, Construction.
The ‘BLOBEE GLORY,’ which was introduced at Halla Mountin on Jeju Island, was planned and constructed to satisfy various customer experiences, such as an outdoor luxury bar and outdoor shelter. BLOBEE is a customized space that utilizes the core values of 3D printing technology, including design freedom and small-batch production advantages.
The ‘BLOBEE’ which consists of an freeform lattice shell structure, incorporates an Adaptive Joint System. This system allows the immediate modification of joint shapes and details according to the form using parametric design technology, enabling additive manufacturing production without any additional processing. Considerations for design, engineering, production, assembly, and construction are already incorporated in the early design stages, allowing customers to generate drawings, estimates, and production schedules as soon as the form is determined. Furthermore, to enhance workability at the construction site, the advantage of minimizing unnecessary assembly processes allows for the completion of on-site construction in just one day.
The Joint is produced using PBF equipment (HP’s MJF 4200) with Polyamide-12 material, exhibiting material performance characteristics of 65MPa compression strength, 48MPa tensile strength, and a 20% elongation at break. The output precision is ±0.5mm. Upon customer request, this joint can be changed to metal materials such as aluminum, cast iron.
